Italy set for record tourist numbers

Owners of Italian holiday accommodation are likely to benefit from a surge in tourism in the country, according to predictions.

Federica Durica, an official at Italy's tourist office, said that popular holiday destinations such as Venice were likely to see a record number of foreign arrivals this year.

Speaking to AFP, he stated that the overall visitor numbers in the city for 2007 could reach up to 20 million.

This means that rental accommodation in Venice and surrounding areas is likely to be in strong demand from tourists.

Mr Durica said that during the year to date, about 8.7 million foreign tourists had spent at least one night in the city -

This is 0.5 million higher than the figure recorded for the whole of 2006.

The comments follow research from MyHoliday.com which showed that tourists are booking up holiday homes in countries such as Italy months in advance because of high demand.
