Istanbul prepares for capital of culture celebrations
The Turkish city of Istanbul is preparing to launch its programme of events to celebrate its year as the European Capital of Culture.
On Saturday January 16th celebrations will be taking place at 6 venues across the city, including an event at the Haliç Congress Centre with the president, prime minster and other important guests which is intended to "draw the worlds attention to Istanbul".
Sekip Avdagic, the chairman of the executive board of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture, said: "Istanbul, the most inspiring city of the world, is ready to share its energy with Turkey and the rest of the world through the title of European Capital of Culture and the organisation of 400 cultural and artistic projects to be realized until the end of the year."
He added that the events are already drawing in significant international interest from neighbouring European countries.
Turkey is predicted to receive a large tourism boost from Istanbul's title and from being outside of the eurozone in 2010. A number of holiday companies have laid on extra flights to destinations across the country, suggesting that affordable accommodation will be in demand.
