Istanbul mega mall officially opens

Europe's largest mega mall, Forum Istanbul, was officially opened today, reports the Hurriyet Daily News.

The new development, which opened its doors to customers at the end of last month, is 495,000 m2 and cost 750 million euros.

Figures reported in the newspaper state that Forum Istanbul is expected to attract 25 million visitors a year and employ 6,000 workers. It is located in the Bayrampasa neighbourhood near the centre of the cities European area.

Istanbul is already expected to draw in thousands of extra tourists next year as the 2010 European capital of culture. Money has been poured in the city to restore cultural sites and organise events. International fashion chain Benetton has also recently announced a new state of the art store in the city.

Favourable exchange rates between the Turkish lira and the pound means Istanbul could see itself become the new destination of choice for affordable shopping. Currently to rate stands at 2.48 lira for every pound.
