Irish 'head for overseas properties this Christmas'

Many second home owners in Ireland are planning to spend Christmas at their overseas property, according to one firm.

Limerick Travel stated that more and more people from the country were choosing to spend the festive season overseas.

However, company director Tony Brazil said that instead of staying in hotels or rented accommodation, a growing number of travellers were opting to stay in their own foreign residence.

Speaking to the Limerick Post, he commented: "There are a huge of people now who own accommodation abroad and are spending the holidays in places like Portugal."

Mr Brazil added that there were numerous reasons for the increase in the number of Irish people choosing to spend Christmas overseas.

He cited Ireland's strong economy and the growth of budget airlines as two major factors behind this trend.

This comes after research by Ebookers.com found that more than one in ten festive holidaymakers from the UK go away every Christmas.
