Irish consumers venture abroad
More and more people in Ireland are choosing to escape its economic woes by venturing abroad, a newspaper has revealed.
According to the Irish Independent, the country is facing problems such as a declining housing market as a result of the global credit crunch.
The publication said this has led to a surge in tourism, despite the fact that people are facing extra financial constraints.
Figures showed that Irish people made more than 7.7 million trips abroad last year - 13 per cent more than in 2006.
The newspaper stated that the surge in tourism has continued into 2008, along with the continuing economic problems.
Commenting on this trend, the Irish Independent said: "It seems that the worse the economy gets, the more we are inclined to pack up our troubles head abroad."
This follows a study by Moneysupermarket.com which found that many Britons are planning to venture further afield for their holidays.
According to the website, this is because the weakness of the pound against the euro has made some traditional European hotspots more expensive than many long-haul destinations.
