Investors urged to seek legal advice
Britons planning to invest in a property abroad have been advised to ensure they seek advice from an independent legal professional.
The recommendation came from overseas living website Shelter Offshore, which explained that ownership status depends on getting the correct contract at the time of purchase.
Taking good legal advice before a deal is agreed will help to ensure that problems with previous owners are avoided and can also mean that it is easier to sell the property on.
Shelter Offshore suggested that The Law Society is a good place to track down a solicitor who is experienced in conducting property deals in foreign countries.
Meanwhile, a new guide to the buying process in Italy published by Overseas Property Mall has also recommended seeking independent legal advice from a local expert.
It is important relevant vendor consent is obtained and that the correct searches are conducted to "ensure that the seller has a registered title and that there are no debts against the property", it explained.
