Investors advised on Italian property market

A homeowner in Italy has urged prospective investors to familiarise themselves with the country's property market before making a purchase.

David Dixon told the Independent that his recent investment in a three-bedroom home overlooking Lake Maggiore has been a success, but offered some advice for newcomers to the Italian market.

He said British buyers should be prepared for the fact that buying a property in Italy will be different to making a purchase at home, with some aspects of the investment likely to be time-consuming.

Mr Dixon explained: "In Italy … there's a very relaxed attitude, so it can take ages to get anything done."

For those with patience, investing in Italy can be an extremely rewarding experience, as Mr Dixon discovered.

"I'm very happy. My apartment is in a stunning location and appeals to families, so it rents well," he told the newspaper.

The investor currently generates about £20,000 a year from renting his property to holidaymakers.

David and Victoria Beckham's move to AC Milan is expected to boost interest in the Italian property market, with the celebrity couple said to be making a documentary on property-hunting in Milan.
