Internet users search for Turkish holidays
Statistics from search engine giant Google have revealed Turkey's growing popularity as a destination for international tourists.
The country's official tourism portal is currently ranked as one of Google's most-visited websites, receiving a rating of 8 out of 10 in terms of importance and international popularity, worldbulletin.net reports.
An official of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism explained that the website was "designed to reach international markets and large audiences".
He added: "We invite all Turkish businessmen, international Turkish brand owners and the whole tourism industry to make use of this portal."
The website can be viewed in four languages, with English, French and German available in addition to Turkish.
Ertugrul Gunay, Turkey's culture and tourism minister, has unveiled a new system under which tourism businesses showing a commitment to the environment will receive a 'green star' in recognition of their efforts, Today's Zaman reports.
The country is anticipating a further boost to tourism in 2010, when Istanbul has been designated a European Capital of Culture.
