High-speed rail improvements to boost Spanish travel

A new addition to Spain's high-speed AVE rail service is set to make travelling around the country by train even easier.

Magdalena Alvarez, the Spanish minister for development, said that travel times on AVE trains will be significantly reduced once the Madrid bypass comes into service.

She told the World Travel Market in London this week that the bypass means passengers will travel from Seville or Malaga to Barcelona in just 5 hours and 40 minutes, Typically Spanish reports.

Effectively connecting southern Spain with Catalonia in the north-east of the country, the bypass reduces journey times by allowing trains to avoid the central AVE station in Madrid.

The AVE line which opened between Malaga and Seville in February has cut journey times between the 2 cities to 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers recently told the Times that the high-speed rail network of France and Spain appeals to travellers seeking "greener transport alternatives".
