Gul announced as Turkish president
Justice and Development party candidate Abdullah Gul has been announced as the new president of Turkey.
Mr Gul was elected into power after obtaining 339 votes out of the 448 cast overall, reports Today's Zaman.
Also, the official extended his gratitude to the people in parliament who had elected him and said that it is important that Turkey adheres to democratic principles.
"The freedoms of thought, expression, religion and conscience stipulated in our constitution are, at the same time, the guarantee of a dignified life for our people," he commented.
He added that diversity and change should be welcomed with open arms and that fundamental freedom was imperative.
Additionally, he said that Turkey was committed to European Union involvement.
Moreover, he also claimed that he will look to speak to all sections of society in the bid to unite different factions.
The initial process to elect a president was blocked in April, after the Republican People's Party decided to boycott the election process.
