Government 'needs to support UK housing sector'

The government has been urged to support the UK housing market, as signs of recovery continue to emerge.

Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the National Association of Estate Agents, called for the stamp duty holiday to be extended in order to stimulate the process.

He also suggested that a commitment to reform the system so that it benefits the sector needs to be made.

Mr Bolton King was commenting following the release of figures from Nationwide, which indicated a 0.4% rise in house prices in October.

Buy-to-let property investors may be making purchases, as he noted that the increase in activity is welcome.

"As sellers come onto the market we may see a levelling out of house prices, but we will also see a far firmer foundation for a real market recovery," the expert remarked.

The Nationwide statistics showed that prices are up 2% compared to a year ago, the typical home now being worth just over £162,000.
