Global financial crisis 'not hitting Turkish tourism'

Turkey's tourism sector is unlikely to be affected by the global financial crisis, an expert has insisted.

Ibrahim Acar, director of the Antalya Culture and Tourism Directorate, said some parts of the country are attracting a growing number of visitors.

For example, he stated that Antalya typically sees an annual increase of 19 per cent, a trend which is holding up this year.

This is despite the increased financial pressures placed on consumers across the world by the credit crunch, as well as fears of a possible recession.

Mr Acar commented: "Although the economic crisis has hit various industries across the world, that is not the case for tourism in Antalya."

Speaking to the Turkish Daily News, he added that the appreciation of the US dollar has also had a "positive influence" on the sector.

This comes after the Association of British Travel Agents revealed that the number of summer bookings for trips to Turkey went up by 20% this year.
