French 'eases' opposition to Turkey EU negotiations

French president Nicolas Sarkozy has stated that France would not stand in the way of negotiations with Turkey over its accession to the European Union.

In a move which may benefit overseas property investors, Mr Sarkozy said that the country would not "object" to negotiations, as long as there were "compatible" with a vision of either accession or "very close association" with Turkey.

Mr Sarkozy's comments follow a recent report by currency specialist HiFX which suggested that British investors continue to be "optimistic" about Turkey's economic progress and chances of entering the EU.

Mark Bodega, marketing director at the firm, compared Turkey to Spain 30 years ago, stating that property prices were attracting British buyers looking for holiday homes.

According to Mr Bodega, the southern resorts of Fethiye and Marmaris have proven popular in the past, but many buyers are now turning to Bodrum in the north.
