French and Spanish destinations 'popular for 2009'
Areas of France and Spain are set to be popular with holidaymakers next year, according to influential travel guide Lonely Planet.
In news which could provide a boost for property owners in both countries, the guidebook publisher has selected several French and Spanish destinations which it expects to be making headlines in 2009.
The Times has provided a preview of Lonely Planet's Blue List - a collection of next year's must-visit destinations - with the Languedoc region in France one of the areas selected.
Lonely Planet describes the region as a "Cinderella of the south" which has often been overlooked in favour of more high-profile property spots such as Provence and the Cote d'Azur.
However, Languedoc is now growing in popularity as visitors begin to appreciate its "discreet charm", as well as the "sandy beaches and dynamic towns".
Also recommended for next year by Lonely Planet is Spain's Basque Country described as a "cocktail of fun, sun, culture and beauty".
The Times recently reported on the Christmas markets in cities such as Paris and Strasbourg currently attracting visitors to France.
