France recommended to British retirees
Older Britons who plan to spend their retirement overseas are being encouraged to set up home in France.
The European country has been recommended by the Times because it offers a number of lifestyle and financial benefits.
Although the newspaper stated that its top rate of income tax is slightly higher than the UK's, it said retirees who earn £52,000 or less would be better off in France, due to the rate for this income bracket.
In addition, prospective expatriates were advised that retired EU nationals would not need a visa if they wished to relocate to the country.
The Times commented: "If you spend longer in France than in any other tax jurisdiction during the space of one year, you will automatically be considered a resident for tax purposes."
This comes after Luc Chatel, France's tourism and consumer affairs secretary, was quoted by Reuters as saying that a record number of people visited the country in 2007.
