Foreign countries 'have lower living costs'

Britons could enjoy a much lower cost of living if they moved overseas, new research has revealed.

According to a study by HSBC, the UK is the third most expensive country in which to live, after France and Norway.

This means that a typical British annual salary could go further overseas, including in places that offer a comparable quality of life.

Enrique Roche from HSBC commented: "Britons who live abroad, especially those who do so for only a few months each year, are often not willing to compromise on their standard of living."

The organisation stated that a year's pay could last for more than 14 months in parts of mainland Europe and more than two years in many South American and African countries.

This could account for the growing popularity of living abroad, as recently highlighted by the Office for National Statistics.

Figures from the body showed that during 2007, about 207,000 UK nationals chose to set up home overseas.
