First-time buyers 'consider foreign purchase'

High house prices in the UK are leading many people to consider buying a property abroad, according to new figures.

Research by Abbey found that one in six first-time buyers were willing to move to another country if they could find a house within their price range.

Commenting on the findings, the firm's Nici Audhlam-Gardiner stated that it had become more difficult for younger people to get on the housing ladder.

She added: "It's interesting to see the lengths that people are prepared to go to for their first property."

Meanwhile, separate research has highlighted an increase in the popularity of Bulgaria among 20 to 35-year-olds from the UK.

A study by Quest Bulgaria magazine revealed that this demographic was now the fastest growing group in the eastern European country.

The publication attributed this trend to the affordability of its properties compared with those in Britain.
