Famous Madrid museum finishes historic extension

The Prado Museum - one of Spain's most famous tourist attractions - has revealed it has finished construction work on a historic extension that will house some of the world's finest arts.

Officials claim that the Prado can now compete with Europe's other major modern museums in terms of both space and the facilities on offer.

The Associated Press reports that the $202 million (£102 million) complex was designed to fit in with the existing 19th Century structure, adding 180,000 sq ft of space to the museum, including room for sculptures and temporary exhibitions.

Carmen Calvo, minister of culture, told the news provider: "We have finished the biggest extension to the Prado in its more than 200 years of existence. It was a question of modernising the Prado in harmony with its past."

Although the construction work has finished, it will be a number of months before the new wing opens to the public while the displays are prepared.

The Prado Museum contains work from several of Europe's most celebrated painters, including Botticelli, Caravaggio, Durer, Rubens, Velazquez and Goya.
