Expats urged to look at tax issues
People who are moving abroad have been encouraged to make sure their tax affairs are in order.
According to ShelterOffshore.com, it is very simple for those who are working overseas to prove that they are now residents of another country.
However, the website said that retirees who are planning to spend their post-working life abroad may find it more difficult.
Older expatriates were encouraged to make sure they cut tax ties with their home properly or risk facing "all sorts of trouble".
ShelterOffshore.com remarked: "As an overseas retiree it is up to you to actively demonstrate to the UK tax authorities that you have moved abroad permanently."
The website added that expatriates would also need to prove beyond any doubt that they have no intention of returning home, at least for the foreseeable future.
According to the Office for National Statistics, more than 200,000 UK nationals moved abroad during 2006.
The organisation highlighted Spain and France as two of the most popular destinations.
