Expats seek lower cost of living

People in Greater Manchester are increasingly choosing to move overseas, according to a newspaper report.

Official figures cited by the Manchester Evening News showed that during the last five years, 8,500 people have left Stockport in order to live abroad.

One expat, 23-year-old Jenny Hilary, told the publication that the high cost of living in the UK was one of the main reasons she had decided to leave.

She commented: "I was born and raised in Stockport but I've no chance of buying a house here."

Ms Hilary added that some other countries offered more affordable property values, as well as better weather and reduced living costs.

The comments come after the Office for National Statistics revealed that a record number of people moved abroad in 2006.

Figures showed that during that year, 207,000 UK nationals left to live overseas on a permanent basis.
