Eurostar links up with regional train networks
Access to mainland Europe by train is set to be boosted after Eurostar announced collaborations with regional rail operators in the UK.
The link-ups with East Midlands Trains, First Capital Connect, GNER and Virgin Trains will mean that the Channel Tunnel can be accessed from people from all over the UK.
Travellers will be able to book return fares to major European cities from British locations such as Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds.
Richard Brown, chief executive of Eurostar, commented: "Eurostar's move to St Pancras International and the introduction of through fares will open up rail travel to the continent for millions of people living to the north of London."
The firm added that the journey times would either match or beat those of air operators, as rail travellers would be able to save time by avoiding tasks such as long check-ins and reclaiming baggage.
This could potentially have the knock-on effect of encouraging interest in countries such as France among foreign property investors.
Travel to the country has become increasingly competitive, as the recent addition of French services by Eastern Airways and Ryanair indicates.
