European countries aim for top award
Countries across the whole of Europe are to compete in order to secure a high-profile international award.
Nations including Bulgaria, Spain, France and Italy are aiming to secure a top honour at the European Destinations of Excellence competition.
A total of 18 countries are participating in the initiative, which has been designed to showcase some of the continent's best tourist attractions and ones that contribute positively to their society, culture and environment.
Although this is being organised by the European Union, non-member states are still eligible to take part, hence the inclusion of places such as Turkey.
According to the Turkish Daily News, the country's ministry for culture and tourism is keen for it to do well in the competition.
The department is understood to consider it a good opportunity to promote some of its best tourist attractions abroad.
Earlier this week, data cited by the Turkish Press showed that during the year to date, Istanbul has received more than 6 million foreign arrivals.
This is 21% more than during the first 11 months of 2006.
