Europe still the favoured market for British buyers

Europe remains the first choice among Britons planning to invest in overseas property, it has emerged.

Much has been made in the press of the potential offered by emerging property markets such as Brazil, which have not been hit by the credit crunch.

However, Paul Collins, property editor of independent website BuyAssociation, said that many British-based investors are still influenced by their own holiday preferences.

Most are only "part-time investors" and want a holiday home to use themselves, as well as a second source of income, he explained.

As such, traditional holiday hotspots in western and southern Europe are still firm favourites with British buyers, Mr Collins continued.

He added: "They will remain that way just because of the ease of getting to them and the fact that the culture and economy is geared up to foreigners buying property."

Property portal Rightmove Overseas recently published figures showing that Spain is still the most enquired about destination among Britons thinking about buying overseas.
