EU Talks with Turkey restarted

Nations in the European Union (EU) have agreed to re-open talks with Turkey regarding the country's proposed membership.

A number of chapters have been opened, including the one on statistics and financial control, although the chapter on economic and monetary policy remains closed for the time being, reports the new Antolian.

The move was made by the committee of permanent representatives at the EU and follows France's opposition.

EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn also hopes that relations can be healed between France and Turkey.

Since Turkey's initial interest in joining the body, it has been met with opposition regarding a number of areas, but it is hoped the new talks will eventually lead to some form of deal.

These initial talks mark a cagey return of Turkey to the debating table, as the talks usually consist of around 35 areas including transport and food standards.

The EU currently has 27 member states including Bulgaria, Romania and Spain.
