EU membership 'boosts eastern European economy'

Membership of the European Union has helped to boost the economies of many eastern European countries, an Indian travel website has said.

MakeMyTrip credited the recent accession of many countries into the EU as a factor behind their growing prosperity.

Sachian Bhatia, head of the company, added that this had in turn had an effect on their tourist industries, as many of these markets were becoming increasingly popular holiday spots.

Speaking to Express Travel World, Mr Bhatia commented: "All these destinations are famous for their immense natural beauty and historical monuments including castles and churches."

Following the fall of communism, many countries in eastern Europe have opted to join the EU in recent years, with Latvia, Poland and the Czech Republic joining in 2004.

Bulgaria and Romania were admitted as full members earlier this year.
