Economy could 'tempt Britons to emigrate'

The economic problems in the UK are likely to tempt more people to consider moving overseas, it has been suggested.

Paul Collins of BuyAssociation said that he had had observed a sharp upturn in the number of Britons buying overseas property in the last five years.

The buyers are a mix of holiday home owners, investors and people emigrating, he explained.

That last category is likely to grow in the coming years, Mr Collins continued, due to the rising cost of living in the UK.

"When the economic situation in the UK is a little bit precarious, you will find people will emigrate a bit more because they often get more for their money overseas," he said.

The expert added that many people now view living and working abroad for a spell as being good for their careers.

A recent NatWest report showed that 77 per cent of Britons who move overseas do so for work reasons.
