Dubrovnik tourism increases 15% in 2007

The number of tourists visiting Croatia's historic city of Dubrovnik increased by 15% in the first 2 months of the year compared to 2006.

Visitors took 52,000 overnight stays in January, highlighting the positive tourist outlook for the country as a whole in the coming year.

Bosnia-Herzegovina provided the highest number of foreign visitors, with Croatia also proving popular among Americans, French and Japanese, Javno reports.

The accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the EU has raised the profile of south-eastern Europe as a holiday destination, with low prices attracting people from across Europe and beyond.

"Eastern Europe tourism in general, particularly in the Balkans, has been gaining popularity, and represents great value-for-money when compared to its western European counterparts," Alex Pilkington of directlineholidays said.

There is also a large amount of interest from high-budget tourists and a number of celebrities have taken an interest in Dubrovnik. American chat-show host Oprah Winfrey is report to be buying a £2.5 million home in Dubrovnik's Old Town.
