Dubai to turn QE2 into 'a world-class tourist destination'
Property investors in Dubai may be heartened to hear that the QE2 will soon become a permanent fixture of the emirate's shoreline as part of a new project to turn it into a major tourist attraction.
State property firm Dubai World has purchased the famous 40-year-old cruise liner for $100 million (£50 million) and she will be delivered in November 2008, ready to be converted into a tourist destination.
Cunard, the cruise line operator which currently owns the QE2, said it is "delighted" with the deal, as tourists will be able to continue experiencing what is described by Dubai World as "one of the wonders of the maritime world".
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World, remarked: "I am delighted we will be able to create a home for her on the newest wonder of the world, The Palm Jumeirah.
"QE2 at The Palm Jumeirah will become one of the must-see experiences of Dubai and of the Middle East. We are investing in creating a truly global tourism destination," he added.
The QE2 was launched in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II, and has since enjoyed a long career as a cruise liner. In 1982, it was called into military service as a troop and cargo carrier and was repainted.
