Drinking habit survey highlights Portugal's 'outstanding' drinking habits

A new survey from the European Commission into drinking habits across the EU has highlighted the "outstanding" nature of Portugal's alcohol consumption.

The Eurobarometer report into alcohol habits in the EU has revealed that more than half of Portuguese people say they never consume more than four drinks in one sitting - in stark contrast to other countries like Ireland, where more than a third do so at least once a week.

However, this does not mean that Portuguese people are averse to drinking alcohol. Indeed, it appears that a significant proportion are of the 'little and often' school of thought, with 47% of respondents from Portugal claiming to have enjoyed an alcoholic beverage on a daily basis over the last 30 days.

The moderation of the Portuguese also stands in contrast to their Iberian neighbours, where more than a quarter of the Spanish population drink more than four alcoholic beverages "several times a week".

Additionally, Portuguese women were shown to have particular restraint with alcohol, with 52% claiming not to have drunk alcohol during the last 12 months, compared to 20% of men - in contrast Denmark, where only 10% of women have not consumed alcohol in the last year.

Other findings from the Eurobarometer survey include the fact that the Irish, Finnish and British are among the worst cultures for binge drinking.
