Downturn 'not putting people off foreign travel'

Consumers in the UK are not willing to let the current economic situation affect their travel plans, a new study has found.

Research commissioned by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) revealed that 83% of those who have been abroad recently will again head overseas in the next year.

This is despite deepening economic problems in the UK, such as rising living costs and turmoil in the banking sector.

However, financial crises were found to be having the consequence of making people more conscious of how much they are spending.

For example, more than 1 in 3 respondents stated that the economic downturn will affect the destination they choose to go to.

In addition, less than favourable exchange rates between the UK and the eurozone were found to be putting some people off taking breaks in western Europe.

This comes after Abta revealed a surge in the number of bookings for non-eurozone countries such as Turkey.
