Demand for residential property in Brazil 'still strong'

The strength of the Brazilian economy means that investing in property in the country is an attractive option, a finance expert has said.

As an emerging economy with low levels of household debt, Brazil has largely been sheltered from the impact of the credit crunch, which has caused widespread disruption to the US and UK property markets.

This has helped to persuade increasing numbers of institutional investors to buy in to equity funds in the South American country, according to the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce.

Julian Thompson, head of emerging market equities at international asset manager Threadneedle, is among those investing in Brazilian stocks, but he is also an admirer of the potential offered by the country's property market.

"The demand for middle income residential property is strong and remains relatively good value," he explained.

Jonathan Garner of Morgan Stanley recently told Reuters that the thriving economy in Brazil had persuaded him to recommend investing in land and property there to his clients.
