Cyprus tourist plan opens up new inland prospects
Investors in overseas property markets, both for those emigrating and those interested in buy to let, may have a new prospect in Cyprus as the Mediterranean island's tourist authority seeks to encourage visitors to move inland and explore the heritage of the country.
In an attempt to draw new kinds of tourists, the huge number of cultural and religious sites on the island is being increasingly marketed, with the chairman of the Cultural and Special Interest Tourism Association, George Michaelides, telling CNN: "We are more than just a sand and sea and sex destination."
Cyprus Tourism Association (CTA) officer Vakis Loizides told the American news agency: "Cyprus packs a huge amount of monuments in such a small space."
Similarly, the CTA has secured 28 million euros (£19 million) to promote its Rural Tourism Initiative, TTN reported last week.
If successful, these initiatives will bring new tourists with different interests from those who congregate on the coast, which enable new markets in property close to historic monuments or areas of outstanding natural beauty to develop.
