Cyprus 'is similar to Britain'

Cyprus' similarity to Britain is one of the main reasons for its popularity with UK buyers, a media report has said.

The Telegraph stated that the appeal of the Mediterranean island was largely based on its resemblance to home in both aesthetic and functional terms.

For example, it said that people in Cyprus drive on the left-hand side, while the road sides are written in English.

In addition, the newspaper highlighted the commonalities between the legal and property systems of Cyprus and the UK.

The Telegraph commented: "A million tourists visit every year, attracted by its year-round warm climate, and as a former British colony, by its similarities to home."

Cyprus' capital Nicosia was singled out as a particularly popular area, largely because it was "cosmopolitan" and offered familiar and highly regarded brands such as Gucci and Debenhams.

The island is due to join the single European currency in January 2008, a move which could potentially add to its appeal among foreign property buyers.
