Cypriots welcome EU membership

Most Cypriots are in favour of Cyprus' membership of the European Union, according to a new poll.

Research by EU commissioner Danuta Hubner found that more than one in three people believe their local area has benefited from being part of the organisation.

However, the study also found that just over a quarter of Cypriot nationals held the opposite view, reports the Famagusta Gazette.

Conflicting opinions were also identified when respondents were asked what they considered to be major priorities for the EU to address.

Almost half said tackling climate change should be at the top of the agenda, while more than one in three said globalisation was an important issue.

The research comes just over three months after the Mediterranean island strengthened its links with Europe by joining the single currency.

Cyprus adopted the euro on New Year's Day 2008, taking the overall number of countries in the eurozone up to 15.
