Croatian EU negotiations progressing well

Membership negotiations on Croatian accession to the European Union (EU) are progressing well, although the government has been urged to do more to restructure the economy and eliminate corruption.

German politicians have spoken positively about the progress of accession negotiations during the country's tenure as president of the bloc, and are hoping to open another chapter in the membership negotiation book before Germany passes the chair on in 6 months.

"CroatiaÔÇÖs negotiation on accession is on the right path. Our current holding of the EU will further stimulate speeding up of negotiations," German EU affairs minister Gunter Gloser said.

"In spite of that, it is very clear that it is necessary to make more effort in various fields of Croatian administration, and corruption is the top priority," he added.

Kolinda Graber-Kitarovic, Croatian minister for foreign affairs and EU integration, asserted the government is committed to eradicating corruption.

Croatia has finished 2 of its negotiating chapters and hopes to join the EU by 2010.
