Credit crunch boosts Turkish tourism

Turkey's tourist industry is benefiting from ongoing economic problems across the world, it has been revealed.

According to the Pamucak Union of Tourism Investors, more and more European people are choosing to visit Turkey instead of places such as Spain.

Speaking to TurkishPress.com, chief executive Rumi Dogay said this is partly because western Europe and the United States are currently being negatively affected by the credit crunch.

As a result, many people are choosing to visit a destination which offers a more favourable financial environment.

Mr Dogay commented: "2008 will be a year of records for Turkey in terms of the number of tourists."

This means that owners of rental accommodation in popular holiday resorts will be seeing an unprecedented level of demand, thereby allowing them to collect greater returns.

The comments come soon after John Bevan of Lastminute.com revealed that Turkey is now its most popular destination.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said it has overtaken Spain as a result of the continuing financial crisis across the world.
