Costa del Sol tourist numbers 'on the increase'
Despite some concerns over the prospects of the Spanish property market, overseas property investors thinking of letting out property for holiday purposes may be heartened to hear that tourist numbers visiting the Costa Del Sol last year increased.
Tourists last year spent some €8 billion (£5.5 billion) while visiting the region, an increase of 6.7 per cent on the previous year's figures.
The figures from the Costa Del Sol Tourism Observatory revealed that the number of tourists rose by 6%, while the number of visitors to the region is expected to top 9.5 million for 2007, the Typically Spanish news provider reports.
Additionally, the average hotel occupancy rate over the course of 2006 grew to 60.59%, the statistics revealed.
Last month, the Sur newspaper reported that Spanish planning authorities are increasingly focusing on sustainable construction to ease the dangers of overdevelopment in the region.
Jose Luis Marcos, regional government representative for Malaga, explained: "It's not a question of stopping construction but of introducing measures to put an end to planning speculation."
