Catalonia 'attracts millions of visitors'
A low-cost airline has highlighted a surge in the number of people visiting the Spanish region of Catalonia.
Ryanair stated that it had transported almost 13 million holidaymakers to Girona and Reus since it began offering services to Spain five years ago.
The firm added that the cheap flights it offered allowed passengers to save more than 1 billion collectively, giving them more money to spend in the region itself.
Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, added that Catalonia would soon benefit from the launch of extra services.
He commented: "At the end of this month, we look forward to bringing even more of Ryanair's guaranteed lowest fares to Catalan passengers, when we launch 14 new routes from Girona."
This is likely to trigger a period of renewed growth in the local property market, due to increased demand among holiday home buyers and overseas investors.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of Britons travelling abroad has risen by 1.5 per cent in the last year.
