Careful planning "a must" for overseas retirement

People hoping to use an overseas property for their retirement have been advised to plan their move abroad carefully.

According to the Independent, many Britons put their plans to retire overseas on hold with the onset of the economic downturn, as they have found it more difficult to sell their homes in the UK.

However, the newspaper claims that retiring to a property in the sun has not become an unattainable dream, but simply requires attention to detail.

Independent financial adviser Ashley Clark told the Independent: "Long-term planning is a must, from what happens to your pension, to property purchase, to how and when you move your assets out of the UK into the country where you want to retire to.

"The key to effective overseas retirement planning is to decide how long you expect to be away."

Spain has proved to be an enduringly popular market with retirees due to the country's warm climate and reliable state healthcare system, which is known to be one of the best in the world.
