Bulgarian deputy PM outlines vision for economic transformation

The Bulgarian deputy prime minister has outlined his vision to turn his country into the major regional economic hub for the Balkans region.

Ivaylo Kalfin, who is also minister for foreign affairs, was speaking at a conference that sought to explore the investment opportunities for Bulgarian business by exploiting relationships with Europe and the US.

Currently, the US ranks only 8th in terms of inward investment in Bulgaria, which is something the minister would like to see improved, the News.bg website reports.

Additionally, Mr Kalfin noted that both European and US-based companies already have an existing presence in the country - something that must be encouraged to develop further.

For example, there are some 560 German companies operating in Bulgaria, as well as 70 US companies, he explained.

The Bulgarian deputy prime minister concluded by saying that Bulgaria has a prominent role to play in Europe's trade with the US, to both the benefit of the EU and Bulgaria.

Recently, the Associated Press news agency reported that Bulgarian officials have been in talks with their EU counterparts about the adoption of the euro - although this is unlikely to happen until the next decade.
