Bulgarian airport traffic increases 16%

Traffic through Bulgaria's airports has increased so dramatically that the country's principle challenge is not attracting more visitors, but to develop its aviation infrastructure.

Olivier Jankovec, director general of the European Airports Council International, met Bulgaria's transport minister Peter Moutacfchiev and told him that the Balkan state experienced one of the highest increases in airport traffic in the European Union last year.

Last year saw a 15 to 16% increase in airport traffic, and Mr Jankovec suggested that the upward trend is likely to continue on the back of accession to the European Union.

He suggested that Bulgaria follow the example of other European nations, and added that privatisation of airports could help provide further funds and increase airport capacity, the Sofia Echo reports.

Both Bulgaria and Romania, its fellow accession state, have dropped protectionism of national airlines and opened their airports to low-cost carriers. The move has helped fuel tourism in the two countries as well as boosting their growing economies.
