Bulgaria 'will consider adopting the euro in the coming years'

"Bulgaria will consider joining the European exchange rate mechanism (ERM) and then adopting the Euro in the coming decade, according to new reports.

The news follows the announcement from Bulgarian finance minister Plamen Oresharski that he would discuss joining the ERM with his European peers during their next meeting.

However, the Associated Press quotes a diplomat from the country as saying that the adoption of the euro is not currently a pressing subject for the minister.

He said: "The minister has said next time, that means some next moment in the future, the question about Bulgarian participation in the euro may be discussed."

"This issue is not a subject of discussion, currently," he added.

Bulgaria's acceptance of the euro has been earmarked to occur in 2010, following adoption of the currency by Cyprus, Malta, Slovakia and Lithuania.

The UK, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic currently have no immediate plans to join the euro.

Bulgaria's existing currency is the lev, which is divided into 100 stotinki."
