Bulgaria to extend royal welcome to George Michael
George Michael will receive a warm welcome from the Bulgarian state on May 28th 2007 when he visits Sofia to perform a concert that he will dedicate to the Bulgarian nurses held in Libya under a death sentence, it has emerged.
In 1998, five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor were charged with deliberately infecting children with HIV in a Libyan children's hospital and despite testimonies from the scientific community insisting that this was not the case, they were found guilty and are being held under the death penalty.
George Michael is one celebrity who has endorsed the You Are Not Alone campaign to release the nurses and in return he will be escorted by police squads from the Bulgarian interior ministry to the Lokomotiv stadium concert venue.
The Standart news provider reports that Michael is "really excited" about the concert and is "eager" to sing Freedom, one of his best-known hits, in honour of the nurses held in Libya.
Among other noted singers and musicians to have performed in Sofia are Gary Moore and Seal. In addition, Iron Maiden are set play in the Bulgarian capital in June.
