Bulgaria 'looks to raise minimum wage'
The minimum monthly wage could be set to rise in Bulgaria, after the government met to discuss the issue.
It is hoped that low-income earners who are hit by higher taxes will be aided by the new law, if it comes into effect in 2008, reports the Sofia Echo.
Under the proposals, the minimum wage would be increased by 22.2%, to 220 leva (£76), the publication stated.
High taxes from the proposed change to a 10% flat tax on income will be countered by this move, the government said.
Prime minister Sergei Stanishev stated that a one-off wage rise would be given to people working in the public sector on low incomes. By doing this, the net level of income would be above last year's, the government said.
