Bulgaria highlighted by Post Office for cheap cost of living and inexpensive shopping
Bulgaria has been highlighted by the Post Office for being the cheapest holiday destination in Europe for shopping, thanks mainly to the inexpensive cost of living.
The company revealed that the strong value offered by the country has seen demand for Bulgarian currency soar among holidaymakers and property investors, with Bulgarian exchange sales growing by 86% in the fortnight up to Easter, compared to the same period last year.
The Post Office's Holiday Costs Barometer studied the cost of 10 items typically bought when abroad - such as suncream, mineral water, a meal for 2 - and found Bulgaria "proved by far the cheapest country" with a shopping basket cost of £16.86.
By comparison, the same items in Spain or the US would cost £65.90 and £69.41, respectively.
Kevin McAdam, head of travel services at the Post Office, stated that consumers "should be careful when comparing costs in different countries".
"It all depends on their relative cost of living and it pays to be aware that favourable currency rates - like those currently available for the US dollar - do not necessarily mean a destination will be cheap," he said.
Recently, sterling passed the $2 barrier for the first time since 1992, thanks jointly to a strong pound, a weak dollar and rising inflation.
