Bulgaria 'backs Turkey's bid for EU membership'

Turkey's bid to become a member of the European Union has received backing from Bulgaria, according to recent reports.

Buglaria, which became a full member in January of this year, has said it welcomes Turkey's efforts to address some of the problems raised by the EU that must be resolved before the accession process can be completed.

The claim of Bulgaria's support follows a meeting between Bulgarian foreign minister Ivailo Kalfin and his Turkish counterpart, Ali Babajan.

The Sofia Echo quotes Mr Kalfin as saying: "The process  takes a lot of time but we value highly efforts in this direction."

He added that bilateral investment and trade between the countries has been increasing, with the possibility of future cooperation on infrastructure projects and visa schemes.

Turkey's accession to the EU has been a relatively long process in comparison to other countries, with some issues, such as the separation of church from state and disputes with neighbours, have proven to be difficult to resolve.
