Bulgaria and the Balkans make global top 50

Bulgaria and the Balkan countries are among Europe's entries in the most competitive economic nations in the world.

The World Competitiveness Yearbook, published by IMD business school, has seen a number of emerging nations close the gap in terms of competitiveness on the traditional power players on the global scene.

In the 2007 edition Bulgaria is in 41st place, while emerging nations in eastern Europe such as Slovenia, the Slovak Republic and Estonia are also making their mark.

The news suggests some of Europe's less developed nations are gathering momentum, as new entrants to the European Union such as Bulgaria attract more investment and more tourists.

Professor Stephane Garelli, director of IMD's World Competitiveness Centre, said up to 40 economies on the list were "closing the gap" on the number one ranked country, the US.

Just 15 are losing ground on the world's biggest economy, turning the spotlight for property investors on some of the world's emerging nations.
