Budget airlines see increased number of travellers

A growing number of people are choosing to fly abroad on budget airlines, according to new statistics.

Figures from Ryanair revealed that during December 2007, the carrier transported a total of 3.95 million people on domestic and international flights.

This is up from 3.36 million a year earlier - an increase of 18%.

The release of Ryanair's data coincides with the publication of passenger numbers by rival budget airline easyJet.

Statistics from the carrier showed that it transported 2.64 million people last month - 9.9% more than during December 2006.

The findings highlight the increasing popularity of budget airlines to people, especially during the winter season.

Numerous industry experts including the Association of British Travel Agents stated that a record number of people from the UK chose to head abroad for the festive season in 2007.
