Britons 'travel abroad to escape winter weather'

Bad weather in the UK is likely to drive many people abroad this Christmas, according to new research.

A study by Co-operative Travel showed that the number of Britons going overseas for the festive season was likely to be 11% higher than last year, reports the Daily Mail.

The weather was cited as the main reason for the Christmas exodus, especially in the wake of this year's wet summer in the UK.

As a result, many were said to be jetting off to sunny locations such as Spain, where visitor numbers are set to be 19% higher than last year.

Meanwhile, a 40% rise in the amount of people going to Cyprus has also been predicted.

This means that there is likely to be an increased level of demand for rental accommodation in these countries.

Mike Greenacre, managing director of Co-op Travel, commented: "The feedback from our customers is that, having missed out on a hot summer, they are desperate to get some sun over the winter."

Recently, the Association of British Travel Agents stated that many second home owners were likely to spend Christmas at their foreign holiday residence in order to enjoy some winter sun.
