Britons seek cheaper destinations overseas

Many Britons are looking for cheaper holiday destinations amid the current economic slowdown, experts have stated.

This week has seen the pound hit a record low against the euro, which means consumers face a sharp rise in the cost of visiting places such as Spain.

The pound has depreciated in value because the UK has been affected by the ongoing international financial problems, such as the credit crunch and the US sub-prime crisis.

However, Helen Warburton of the Post Office believes that some countries are still affordable places to visit.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she highlighted Turkey as one place which is attracting more and more attention.

She commented: "We have already seen a 15% increase in our currency sales for Turkey, which indicates people are looking for destinations where their holiday money will go further."

Ms Warburton added that countries in eastern Europe are also being considered by many British tourists.

Earlier this week, David Kuo of The Motley Fool recommended that people who are planning to travel to a eurozone country should get their currency as soon as possible.

Speaking to the Metro, he said the pound is likely to keep falling in value before the summer.
